  • Snake Feast!

My goodness, it's been 3 months since I've updated this blog. My apologies!

I went back to Hong Kong to visit family/ spend the holiday. Of course, I had some AMAZING food!  That's right, I had a snake feast! Snake is thought to be good for the body, but that's besides the point (for me anyway). The point is all the dishes there was delicious! Let the feast begin :)

If you're iffy about reptiles, I suggest you get away now... Don't worry, I'll be back w/ other amazing food, something less iffy ^^

    Snake Stew

It has shredded snake with some other ingredients. I think there's black fungus and bamboo shoots. It was quite delicious w/ some white pepper.

    Fried Veggie Wraps

    close-up

You can eat it w/ mayonnaise if you want. It has shredded carrots, black fungus, and bamboo shoots, so the vegetable of the snake stew.

    7 Herbs Stuffed Duck

    close-up

I should say 7 ingredients cuz that's more appropriate than "7 herbs" It was very fragrant! There's shiitake mushrooms, chestnuts, and some other Chinese herbs that made this dish very herby. The meat so so tender it broke off from the bone if you only poke it gently w/ a fork. I think the 10 of us at the table finished all the meat in less than 5 min.

Steamed Eel w/ Black Bean Sauce

    close-up

Oh so good... the eel was tender and it soaked up all the black bean sauce's flavor!  I slurrped up all the skin because the fat of the eel was so flavorful.

    Snake Soup w/ Chicken Feet

    There's the chunk of snake!

This is a little lighter compared to the duck and the eel.  It's a nice dish to make you feel a little healthier so you'll be ready for the next dish.

    Stir-fried Pawns

The flavor was good but the pawn was not as "bouncy" as it could've been, which was a little disappointing. Also, I didn't want to peel it so I only had one.

    Hot Lamb Pot

Gotta have it for winter!  You really can't go wrong with the lamb pot.  The only disappointment was that there was not enough lamb! The tofu skin and napa cabbage were excellent as they soaked up all the flaovrs.

    Vegetable w/ Mushrooms

A healthy way to end the feast.  Although it's drowned in a rather thick sauce, the veggie was really fresh so that was quite refreshing.

    Happy Eating! ^^

  • My Friend Turned 21!

Yup, November is practically a party month for me cuz I have a bunch of friends who were born in this month. The very first b-day girl turned 21 last Saturday so what's better than dim sum when there's a large group of Cantonese?  We went to Shanghai for a nice, long brunch

    Dim Sum

Don't all those dishes just look so delicious? They were!

    Chicken Feet (鳳爪)

    Radish Cake (蘿蔔糕)

    Siu Mai (燒賣)

    Ha Gau (蝦餃)

    a.k.a. shrimp dumplings.

    Seasoned Beef (牛雜)

It's really seasoned cow stomach, but it's pretty good. It's really not as gross as it sounds. But then again, I'm Chinese ^^

    BBQ Pork Bun (叉燒包)

    Inside:

    Yellow Custard Bun (奶皇包)

    Inside:

Sticky Rice wrapped in Lotus Leave (珍珠雞)

    Inside:

    Yeung Chow Fried Rice (揚州炒飯)

Thanks Andrew for portioning out the rice for the 10 of us! Your hard work is certainly appreciated ^^

    Cheung Fun (腸粉)

    a.k.a. stuffed flat rice noodle.

    BBQ Pork Cheung Fun (叉燒腸粉)

Fried Dough Stick Cheung Fun (炸兩)

It's fried, slightly salty dough wrapped in flat rice noodle. It's so wonderful w/ soy sauce and hoisin sauce~

    Bean Curd 豆腐花

Very tasty w/ the ginger brown sugar syrup. Taiwanese eat this salty, but we Cantonese eat this sweet :)

Phew, wow, that's a lot of fun. I hope you all enjoyed looking at them as much as I did ^^

  • Getaway Weekend

Before I head over to San Francisco, I better update what I've been consuming (which is not much) for the past weeks or so.

    Boomerang's

It's an Australian style meat pie.  Apparently it's as common as burgers are in the U.S.  I tried the chicken mushroom pie. It was pretty good. I like how even though it's a cream sauce, it's not heavy. The ingredients are pretty fresh so it's not heavily seasoned, which I like.  And I love onions! The texture of mushroom and chicken together is good that this combo gives it a bit of a bite. Overall it's decent :)

    Spaghetti Carbonara

I made it w/ a friend of mine. It was good! Just made it w/ salami, milk, eggs, freshly grated Parmesan cheese from the can, and of course, spaghetti! Didn't add enough salt and pepper though so it's not as flavorful as I would like it to be. It'll be much improved next time :)

  • Long Time No Cook

I haven't cooked for almost a week! So last night I cooked

    Steamed Rice

The rice cooker at my place is pretty big and I don't want to use that for only 2 bowls of rice, so I use this little pot. It's really easy if you have a pot that has a lid that goes with it. If you don't, you can do what I do:

Seriously, I just cooked my rice like that. Ghetotastic. It turns out fine, nothing was burned down or anything. I cooked a cup of jasmine rice w/ 1 1/2 cups of water on low heat all the way through. Start hanging around when you can smell the rice, the water should be boiling by then, and make sure you listen to the water. You don't want to open the lid or too much water will escape as steam and you'll have hard rice. After a while a lot of steam is going to come out and it's ok. Once the boiling sound stops, just let it cook for, I'd say, another 3 mins or so. Then turn off the heat and just let it sit for at least 5 mins so it'll have more time to absorb the water and you'll have soft, fluffy rice! Of course, if you're cooking more, all these steps are gonna take longer. Honestly I don't know how long so if you're worried, just let it sit for long with the heat OFF and it should be ok.

Stirred Fried Onions and Broccoli in Black Bean and Garlic Sauce

I caramelized the onions first. It would've been a lot softer if I wasn't so hungry/ had the patience to let it caramelized. Anyway I boiled some broccoli and throw it in w/ the onions once the onions are starting to get translucent. After putting all the veggies in the pot I put in about 2 teaspoons of black bean and garlic sauce from the jar   I didn't have ice to make ice water bath for my broccoli to stop the cooking process so they got kind of soggy. It was still good though.

    Scrambled Eggs with Spinach

I did it! It came out in one piece! I'm so happy! I just cooked half a bundle of spinach w/ some salt then pour in 3 beaten eggs. It's so pretty and it tastes so good ^^ This has gotta be the best dish of the night.

  • Cheesecake Factory 30th Anniversary

What's their promotion? $1.50 slice cheesecake night! How can I, Foods Addict, miss out on this golden opportunity to get this expensive, decadent, delicious cheesecake? You bet I didn't!

    Frozen Mango Ice

Pretty no? It was very mango-y too. Pretty good.

    The Anniversary

That's right, this slice of cheesecake was only $1.50  Pretty darn good if you asked me. There's the signature blob of whipped cream. That big rose on top is chocolate icing, but you probably have figured that out already. There's also chocolate crunch that crusted the cake. Let me separate the layers for you, from top to bottom:

    cream cheese
    chocolate cream cheese
    chocolate cake
    chocolate cream cheese
    cream cheese
    chocolate cream cheese
    chocolate cake

You're right. I couldn't finish it in 1 sitting so I brought the rest home. As usual, it gets too sweet after a few bites but it was still good.

    Happy Eating! ^^
